What’s your deeper ‘why’?

Many years ago, I was dating a guy I’ll call Joseph. I was also regularly seeing a counselor.

Joseph had this habit of brushing his teeth or washing his face and leaving water on the bathroom counter and it drove me nuts. I’d get mad and frustratedly ask him to clean up after himself and it would inevitably turn into another little argument. My approach probably wasn’t great and as a result, neither was his response.
So I talked to my therapist about this ongoing power struggle.

She asked me why it bothered me that the bathroom counter was wet.
“It’s rude!” I said.

“Why?” she asked.

“Because he should act like an adult and dry the counter!” I responded.

“Why?” she asked again.

She just kept asking ‘why’, digging deeper and deeper until I realized, the REAL reason it made me so mad was because, when I was leaning forward to put on mascara, if the sink was wet, it would get my clothes wet, right before leaving the house.

Was it rude or childish on his part to not just wipe it dry? Sure, ya. It was. But if I had understood the deeper ‘why’ from the beginning it would have influenced my own approach and saved a lot of heartbreak.

I learned from that counselor to always ask why.

So what are some of your ‘whys’?

Why are you doing or not doing what you suspect you need to be, in order to boost your fertility?

Are you not taking a daily walk because your knees hurt? Then maybe we can get you on some herbal supplements that help with pain AND support the liver at the same time.

Is your sleep being disrupted because you drink all of your water at night? Why? Maybe you’re a teacher and can’t leave the classroom or you work in a lab in protective clothing that’s hard to put on and take off. Maybe we can set some water goals that include timing your consumption more in the morning than in the evening.

Are you taking crappy gummy vitamins because you have a hard time swallowing pills? Maybe we can find you a better brand or even a liquid prenatal.

Sometimes we have to dig deeper in order to find the understanding that will help us move to the next level of whatever we’re trying to achieve, from better communication skills, to improving our health, to getting our families started.

I could share so many stories from my clinic about asking my patients ‘why’ that led to breakthroughs that changed their lives for the better.

From the recent weight lifter who wasn’t building muscle as fast as he thought he should, realizing he was only sleeping 5 hours per night and never giving his body a chance to heal.
To the woman who really needed a hysterectomy due to enormous fibroids, who’d already been hospitalized and received a blood transfusion, but refused because her mother had always told her she would eventually need one and she didn’t want her mother to be right. (She got the hysterectomy afterall and is healthy and thriving now).

Digging into your ‘why’ can be all the understanding and motivation you need in order to achieve your greatest goals.
